Summer Runnin’

Summer Runnin’

Sometimes you just do things (Scott Jurek, Eat and Run) I find writing assignments interesting at times, when you are right in the heart of an essay it can be fun to find out new things.  When all you can see out of your window is blazing sunshine and an inviting warm breeze flows through the window, it’s extremely boring.  I headed out of the door for a run.  It had to be long.  Not quite sure how long but…

A post-feast PB

A post-feast PB

I’ve had a lazy couple of days.  I intended to go for a run yesterday but convinced myself otherwise during the course of the day.  Today I went out on impulse; snap decisions seem to be the way I work where fitness is concerned.  Perhaps my decision was also motivated by the guilt I felt following last night too. Last night I went out for tea with good friends to a local carvery.  The setup wasn’t conducive to sensible portion…

It’s a Beautiful Day…

It’s a Beautiful Day…

Getting out the door seems so much easier when the sun is out.  I’m currently sitting in my room about to go for a run with the sun beaming through the window.  It’s cool but not cold, breezy not blustery.  Perfect running conditions. I find it so much easier to motivate myself when the weather is on my side, it’s one less mental hurdle to conquer before firing up the Garmin, donning my running shoes and heading for the road….

Frustrations of a Garmin owner…

Frustrations of a Garmin owner…

Last night, I had to perform the rather bizarre Factory Reset on my Garmin Forerunner 310xt in a final attempt to rescue it from whatever demons have been possessing it in the last few months. My Garmin and I have been ‘on a break’ for a while, as modern relationship lingo would have it.  It hasn’t been switching on for the last month or so andbefore that it transferred plenty of 0 byte files on any occasion that I tried to transfer any…

More shoes than hot dinners!

More shoes than hot dinners!

Go back to Summer 2014.  A change of running shoes was in order.  Unfortunately, this didn’t mean ogling over over-priced new-season gear in a swanky up-market running shop.  I was in the process of beginning to decorate my room, which entailed sorting through my many clothes and shoes.  In the back of my wardrobe I found a few, very worn out, pairs of running shoes although none of them rivalled my Brooks Ghost 3s which I found in the garage early…

A hitch in my stride

A hitch in my stride

So the plan has been going well, 4 workouts in the last 7 days.  It would have been 5.  Last night I went to bed, determined to go out today and put some miles into my legs.  Today, I woke up with a stinking cold.  Until about 1pm I brushed it off and told myself that I’d go out and ‘run it off’.  Many sopping wet, sometimes blood-filled tissues later, I decided that probably wasn’t the wisest course of action. And…

Why I needed a fitness plan

Why I needed a fitness plan

Planning isn’t something that I’m very good at when it concerns fitness.  My sessions, until recently, have been something I’ve fancied at that particular moment in time.  Spur of the moment, spontaneous sessions not really following a set pattern.  Whilst it’s lovely to have the freedom to think ‘Yeah, today I fancy a 10 mile run’, the reality is that I am rarely motivated without a goal in mind.  After all, the last goal that I aimed for was the…

Does being obese mean you are disabled?

Does being obese mean you are disabled?

Various national newspapers have reported on the decision from the European Court of Justice to deem obsesity a disability.  You can find one take on it here:  http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-30529791 Disabled is defined in the OED as ‘Deprived of some ability’ and most traditionally covers conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis, ME and Cerebal Palsy.  In such cases, the person does not have a choice of whether to be disabled or not.  They do not choose to wake up feeling ill.  In all…

A guide to the best pre-run breakfast you can eat!

A guide to the best pre-run breakfast you can eat!

My Favourite Pre-Run Breakfast:  Why Scrambled Eggs are my safe bet If I plan to go out for a long run I generally have scrambled eggs and some toast for breakfast, simple as that.  Porridge is really heavy and tends to cause stomach trouble if I try and run any great distance.  Cereal isn’t filling enough to keep my hunger at bay whilst out on the run.  So after a bit of experimenting I decided that 2 scrambled eggs and…

Like a yoyo…

Like a yoyo…

So I had a run in the rain which felt amazing followed by a run, two days later, that felt really rather sluggish and heavy legged followed by a day of over-eating at a wedding on Saturday and Sunday evening at work.  And as a result of all that, no time for running.  It’s been a fantastic weekend, don’t get me wrong.  But.  And it’s a big but, it’s not helping me build any form up.  Get the feeling that…
